Jane Austen’s Lady Susan tells the story of a young widow who leaves high society in London for the country house owned by her brother-in-law. Given Lady Susan’s reputation as a seductress and schemer, the lady of the house, Catherine Vernon, is rightly suspicious and not exactly thrilled at her arrival. Her discomfort increases as Catherine’s impressionable younger brother arrives, and is immediately smitten by the new house guest, followed by several uninvited guests who complicate things further. Lady Susan’s plans to acquire position and wealth for herself and her daughter hit a few bumps in the road as alliances change, but it all ends well.
